A McLean home where the playroom was designed by GrOH! and the safety work had to match a finished design: patterned wallpaper, a climbing wall, colored furniture, and a lot of open shelving.
Sharp edges were a concern. Ivory edge cushion run along the metal side table, the bench, the glass table, and the nightstands; corner cushions cover the playroom kitchen and the bedroom furniture. Shelving units and freestanding furniture are tethered to the wall with anti-tip anchors so they can be climbed without coming down.
Black retractable gates guard the stairs at both ends. Doors got a mix of solutions by type: Door Guardian on the double doors, spring hook-and-eye latches on the small green doors, pocket door locks, and child-safe door stops. Cabinets and drawers throughout — including the bathroom — got latches, and the bath got a spout cover.
