Older, historic Arlington homes bring their own list: original trim, plaster walls, and outlets and fireplaces where a modern builder wouldn’t put them.

We used retractable gates at the top and bottom of the carpeted staircase and at one room entry, because a retractable gate mounts with brackets and leaves the original woodwork intact. The fireplace opening is covered with clear plexiglass. The television is secured with anti-tip straps.

Electrical was a big category in this home: sliding safety plates on the outlets, an expandable cover over the power strip, and a cord cover on the wall-mounted baby monitor’s cable. A doorknob cover and a flip lock finished the doors.
